Tynietoy Treasures [11]

We recently saw these two Hepplewhyte chairs in the second hallway of the Tynietoy mansion. I admired them and thought they were quite unusual,

so I asked the owner for more photos (we will get some better prints soon). The backs of these chairs are much more elaborate than the usual

Hepplewhyte chair. We also saw seats that were done in a fabric, again unusual. Now I have learned that the seats were originally painted

with flowers but slip covers were added later, so they are removable.

Here is the Tynietoy Mansion that we have been viewing the rooms of and which has a great story. Many years ago at a Tynietoy meeting in

Lancaster, MA at Herb Hosmer’s toy museum, a guest had arrived and told us of how she acquired this house and all its furnishings.

It was the week of Christmas when her mother was searching for a Christmas gift for her daughter. An advertisement in the local

newspaper had mentioned that a dolls’ house and its furnishings were for sale for $25. This was the 1950’s and so her mother went

to see it. She thought it was lovely but she really could not spare that much money. All week she kept searching for a special gift

and she could not find anything. Finally, it was Christmas eve and she decided to go back and see if the dolls’ house was still there…

…and yes it was, beautifully displayed on a table! She bought it and brought it home for her daughter! That must have been an

unbelievable holiday to have this house and all its furnishings in their original boxes!

All of the collectors attending the meeting gathered around to see the boxes full of furniture! And here was the daughter to share her wonderful gift.

Then a few years later, a member of our group, told us that she had purchased that same Tynietoy mansion. Sadly the lady had gone through a divorce,

needed some money and decided to sell it. The new owner has now passed it down to her daughter and is sharing it with us now. (more photos to come).

The Music Room in the Tynietoy Mansion- This room is located to the far right on the first floor. Since it is at the end of the house,

there are two doors that lead to the garden! This room always had the mural painted on the walls and the scene of the ship in the center with

various kinds of trees and shrubbery with mountains in the background!

There are so many wonderful things to view in this room- The Sheraton sofa in yellow with the matching wing chair-and there is a Peggity grandmother

in her purple dress with lace! In front of the sofa is the butterfly table opened up to hold a tray with a dark blue pitcher and vase. Then if you look carefully

there is a black Japanned grand piano against the back wall and in front of it is a black Japanned tilt top table! Then we see a lovely square firescreen next to

the built in fireplace. Then on the other side of the fireplace is the Lyre back chair and another one over by the yellow sofa! You can see the “Lyre” is carved

on the back of the chair. Oh my, we can see a card table in the red Japanned style that is opened up to accommodate glasses and plates of food! The four Hepplewhyte

chairs have dark green seats with flower decoration and are placed around the table. Can you imagine finding so many treasures in one room!

We are on the third floor of the Tynietoy Mansion and are viewing the bathroom and play room. In the toy room, we can see the built in

fireplace on the left hand side. The nursery furniture is an unusual shade of blue. We can see the Tynietoy crib, chest of drawers,

table, and the little chair is near the table and behind is the pink folding screen.

While looking over the rooms in the Tynietoy Mansion, it seems more appropriate to call this room the music room!

Here we have a rare harpsichord in the Japanned style in black with other similar furniture done in black lacquer; the secretary

on the back wall and the Grandfather’s clock beside it. The color scheme is in the back and red, so the mat on the floor looks like

the old oilcloth in the checkered black and white! I can’t help but notice the rare floor lamp all done in black too with white

carnations on the shade! The black Windsor chair keeps it in the black mode and in front of the Mount Vernon settee is a guitar!

The framed painting above has a primitive girl in red and black background! We can’t forget the red folding screen with Chinese

decorations and the Queen Anne red mirror! I see another red chair in the back and way back in the corner is a Spanish arm chair.

Quite a collection of some very exceptional pieces!

Here is a bedroom in the Tynietoy Mansion that is completely furnished in the Black Japanned furniture except for the canopy bed,

the Pembroke table and Mount Vernon settee that is in front of the bed. The Japanned pieces are as follows from left to right: the lowboy,

the highboy, the bow front chest, the Empire mirror, the washstand (next to the bed on the right), the bookcase and Lyre back chair, the

dressing table and the New England cradle. The special accessories of porcelain vases, hat boxes on top of the highboy, needlework pillows, the

tray of glasses on the Pembroke table, and even the baby in the cradle certainly brightens up the room to make it alive and cozy! Colors are nicely

coordinated in the rose shades with black.
